Medikinet is prescribed as an ADHD treatment drug. Each dose contains either 5mg, 10mg or 20 mg of methylphenidate which is an active CNS stimulant. Medikinet should not be prescribed in isolation but as part of a comprehensive treatment programme for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and is suitable for prescription to children over 6 years of age when remedial measures alone prove insufficient.

ADHD treatment pharmaceuticals, such as Medikinet, are most effective when used as part of a comprehensive treatment programme which typically includes psychological, educational and social measures, the aim being to stabilise children with this behavioural syndrome characterized by symptoms which may include chronic history of short attention span, distractability, emotional lability, impulsivity, moderate to severe hyperactivity, minor neurological signs and abnormal EEG. As yet there is no evidence to suggest that use of Medikinet impairs learning in any way.

Medikinet treatment is not indicated in all children with this syndrome and the decision to use this medicinal product must be based on a very thorough assessment of the severity of the child's symptoms.

Medikinet treats the patient by having a mild CNS stimulant effect with more prominent effects on mental than on motor activities. Its mode of action is thought to be due to cortical stimulation and possibly to stimulation of the reticular activating system.

Flynn Pharma publishes an ADHD information and support website at http://www.flynnadhd.com/ providing parents with useful information and detailing exercises that can help children with this syndrome.
